Areas of Research Interest:

Dr Maria Attard is a Senior Lecturer in Geography and the Director of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development. She is a transport geographer and specialises in urban transport, policy and project implementation. She has also coordinated the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Laboratory at the University of Malta for over 14 years and has subsequently published in the field of GIS education. She was a consultant to Government between 2002 and 2009 in transport strategy and policy and encouraged the use of GIS for projects and data management within Government. She studied at the University of Malta and completed her PhD in 2006 at UCL and has published extensively in the area of urban transport policy, GIS education and human geography. She supervises students at postgraduate level in areas of transport geography and sustainability. Dr Attard is currently the co-chair of Cluster 2 of NECTAR (Network on European Communications and Transport Activities Research) and co-chair of Special Interest Group 10 of the World Conference for Transport Research Society (WCTRS). She has coordinated research events and is currently involved in a number of funded projects, is a reviewer on a number of international journals and contributes to local debates on sustainability and transport.
