Education: Torbjørn Digernes holds a master degree in technical physics and a doctorate degree in computer science from the Norwegian Institute of Technology. He is professor in Marine Systems Design at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim.
Prior Work: He was Dean of engineering faculties at NTNU from 1999 to 2005. From August 2005 to August 2013, he was appointed Rector of NTNU, with responsibility for both academic and administrative matters. In his work as a university leader he has put emphasis in creating cross disciplinary research and education, and to strengthen university-industry cooperation. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, and of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences Letters. Earlier he has been working for 16 years in Norwegian research institutes in the marine and maritime field, and for six years in the Manned Space Flight program of the European Space Agency.
Current Employment/Responsibilities: He is a member of the Research Policy Committee of the Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions. He represents Norway in the Research Policy Working Group of the European University Association (EUA). He is heading the steering committee of EUA’s European Platform of Universities involved in Energy Research and Education (EPUE), and is the EUA observer in the Executive Committee of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA).
He has had a number of positions in boards and committees in the Norwegian research and education community.
Areas of Research Interest: His research interests have been focused on system level modeling and techno-economic analyses of technical systems. Currently he is developing research ideas on studies to gain a better understanding of how different elements in university-industry/society relations are creating value for society, and how to strengthen universities capabilities in this respect.
